About the Event

Wade in the Water is a documentary film by David Mesfin that delves into the 1,000-year-old tradition of Black surfing and aquatic culture from Africa to the Americas. A historical chronicle of the Pan-African surfing tradition that stretched the coastline of West Africa from Senegal to Angola and has since taken root in America. The film features several of SoCal’s leading surf historians as well as community leaders and environmental activists in the upcoming generation of pioneers.

The ultimate intention of this creative project is to inspire and support the next generation of Black surfers by sustaining the ancestral wisdom that connects us to nature, ourselves, and each other.

Join us in Santa Cruz on July 23rd 3-6PM for a preview screening of the doc, followed by a Q&A with the Filmmakers and conversation with local community org. leaders Bella Bonner and Kayiita Johnson of Black Surf Santa Cruz and @Black.Surfers.

On Sunday July 24th Traveler surf Club will host an open house from 9:30-12 and Bella from Black Surf Santa Cruz will lead a group paddle out on the east side.

RSVP.  Both events are FREE!
